How to Create a Successful Xeriscape Design

If your outdoor design is looking dull, it’s time to start a landscape renovation project. The key to any successful garden is a well-planned design. Two things that are essential to plants are water and light. In Texas, we have plenty of sunshine for the plants to enjoy. Sadly, we’ve been in a drought since 2023, which is why xeriscaping techniques will be essential. These landscaping methods will help to reduce irrigation needs and maximize natural resources. For instance, drought-resistant plants can be placed around rocks to reduce runoff after storms.

Soil

The first step in creating a xeriscape design is to improve the soil. If the soil is composed of clay, the small particles will create a tighter bond, making it much harder for moisture to be absorbed. On the other hand, sandy soils are more porous, which can cause any rainfall to drain away too quickly. The optimal soil will be one that’s composed of organic materials, which can hold water but release it when the plants need it.

Water

While watering with the hose may seem efficient, this shallow watering technique can actually cause plants to develop shallow root systems. Installing an irrigation system will allow the landscape design to get the deep watering it deserves.

Remove Turf

Living in areas that experience periods of drought means that you have to be precise in choosing plants for your landscape. While having a green and lush-looking lawn may be your vision, turfgrass requires water weekly to keep its bright appearance. Instead, replace it with low-maintenance plants that are able to withstand periods of drought.

Plants

There are plenty of drought-resistant succulents that can add tons of color to your landscape design. Some of the best plants for warmer climates are Aeoniums, Senecio mandraliscae, Sempervivum, Crassula ovata, Cereus, and Echinocereus.
